After graduating from high school, I was in a frenzy trying to figure out how to prepare for my first year of college. Not only did I spend the summer mentally and emotionally bracing myself to leave home, but I also had to organize the sheer amount of stuff needed to fill a dorm room. For me, it was chaos. I didn’t know how to keep track of what I already had, what I needed to buy, and what was passed down from an older cousin. Looking back, a list of dorm registry ideas would really have come in handy.

What Is a Dorm Registry (and How Do You Make One)?

A dorm registry is a wish list of dorm items you can share with family and friends if they ask for gift ideas or want to specifically buy you something for your dorm. Putting it all together in one place streamlines exactly what you need for a new dorm room. Especially after graduation, when all Grandma wants to give you is a sentimental copy of Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, it helps to have a tactful way to ask her for a practical desk lamp instead. It’s also so easy to make a dorm registry online; here are a few companies that let you create dorm wish lists on their sites.

  • Amazon lets you create a public or private list with anything you could possibly think of, including laptops if you think the family is feeling particularly generous!
  • Target is a go-to dorm shopping option with a wide range of items to include on your list.
  • Walmart lets you make and share registries for all kinds of occasions, from a classroom registry to a dorm registry.
  • IKEA has a gift registry option and is perfect for those focusing on furniture and compact storage solutions.
  • MyRegistry connects to many different stores and sites, making it useful when asking for items sold at different locations.

Dorm Registry Ideas

So, you need a dorm registry. But what to put on it? You do so much in your dorm, from sleeping to studying to eating, and you’ll need “stuff” for all those moments and more. Here are my essential dorm registry ideas broken down into useful categories.

Bed

Most people aren’t used to sleeping in a twin XL. Grab these bedding items to get a great night’s rest.

Communal Bathroom

The communal bathroom life can take some getting used to, but add these items to your dorm registry and you’ll be prepared.

Private Bathroom

If you have a private or semi-private bathroom, you’ll probably need a few more items to furnish the space.

Closet and Clothing Storage

With limited clothing storage, it’s key to take advantage of every square inch of closet space.

Desk and Study Area

Don’t forget about the schoolwork that comes with the dorm room!

Furniture and Decorations

Make your dorm cozy and homey by adding your own personal decorations and functional furniture.

Kitchen and Food Area

Having the right kitchen supplies is critical for making those on-the-go breakfasts and late-night dorm snacks. Some dorms come equipped with refrigerators and microwaves, while others make you bring your own, so check your building’s info before you make your registry.

Cleaning Supplies

You’d be surprised how quickly such a small dorm room can get so messy. These essential cleaning items will keep the space tidy and sanitary.

Miscellaneous Essentials

The things you might forget about, as they don’t fit neatly into one category, but are just as important!

Traveling the world is one of Kailey’s favorite (and most expensive) hobbies, and she got to study abroad during the spring of 2025 in Seville, Spain — her favorite city on the planet.
