As the senior editor at Dorm Therapy, two parts of my job that I really love are looking through our Dorm Tours submissions and working with our incredible editorial interns. So sharing this tour on the site is a treat, to say the least, as it was submitted by Laney Crawley, who was our fantastic intern during her senior year at UNC Chapel Hill during the fall of 2025 and winter and spring of 2026.

Her spacious room in the senior-year home she shared with her three roommates was filled with pink lights, bow details, and clothing and accessories that are so cute, they double as decor. The vision board she made and hung right above her mirror for daily inspo is one of my favorite features. Read on for some absolute candy of a room tour.

Laney’s Space

What do you like about your space? My roommates and I found this space when we were sophomores because my roommate was lucky enough to know some graduating seniors who were looking for someone to take it! We loved the house because it is a super close walk to campus, and has so many windows and natural light. We also both have our own room and bathroom, so that was another huge draw.

I absolutely love my room and how girly and elevated it is while also being cozy! I was super intentional about decor: I love the color pink and have my whole life, so most of my detailing and accessories are pink. I also love fashion, so I have tons of magazines, style books, and editorial posters on my wall. I just feel like my room is the perfect culmination of everything I love and has become my source of comfort and relaxation — something I couldn’t fully experience in a dorm with a roommate. Not that I had a problem with my roommate, but having a space be entirely my own is just a different feeling.

What is your space best known for? This is for sure my place to relax and unwind — I am honestly kind of weird about having my friends in my room because it’s so personal to me! My room is 100% just a me place.

What was the biggest challenge in decorating your space? There was no light in my room (no big light or anything like that) so it was a challenge trying to balance the natural light of the room with the light needed to study and do daily tasks. I have [color-changing] LED lights that I usually keep pink and a smaller lamp I keep near the entrance. Even still, it can be dark in my room toward the evening! I had saved up from my summer internship in order to decorate my room, and my parents helped a ton as well.

Laney’s Style

How would you define your personal home style? I just wanted my room to have all my favorite things. My personal style is very girly: I love bows, lace detailing, and pink. I really love a cohesive design, so I actually went for a pink-and-white theme. My bed sheets have pink bows and my throw is white and fuzzy. I also have a ton of spare fabric and such around my room just hanging because I love to sew and I love interesting fabrics! I think anything can make a cute wall decoration.

What is your favorite element of your space? It’s so hard to choose! I love everything about my room, but I love the vision board I made and hung right over my mirror so I can see it daily. I also love the little lace bows my best friend from home gave me, and my bed — I found it on Facebook Marketplace and it’s so nice!

Laney’s Budget

How much did your housing cost per semester? I pay $750.

Did you have anyone helping to fund your housing? Yes, my mom!

How much did it cost to decorate your space? Maybe around $1,000 in total and over time, but I brought over a lot of things from my dorm from last year.

Did you have anyone helping to fund your decor? Yes, my mom!

Did you pay for your living expenses? No.

How did you earn your income senior year? A paid internship and a side hustle.

What was your biggest splurge for this space? $400 for my vanity!

What was your best budget find for this space and how much did it cost? My bed from Facebook marketplace — it was $150 and it’s in amazing condition!

Laney’s Advice

What small space tips do you have? I deep clean every week. I recommend investing in good cleaning products, so you don’t have to rebuy things often, ESPECIALLY a vacuum! I also have a clothing rack which doubles as a decor item! However, my room is pretty uncommonly big, so I got lucky when it came to space.

What is your proudest DIY or product hack? All the small details I included that tie everything together so well, especially the bow accents everywhere (like on my sheets, vision board, and lamp!). Intentional choices like that really make my room look like it has a cohesive design.

The first thing I ever said I wanted to be when I was young was an interior designer. But, after years of waiting by the mailbox for my favorite magazines and seizing every opportunity to write, I decided to pursue journalism. I started my career at Boston magazine, before pivoting into strategic communications, and coming back to journalism when I joined Apartment Therapy in 2022 — the perfect union of my childhood dream and adulthood passion. I edit the Life section, covering wellness, money, career, small-space living, mental health, and all the items, habits, hacks, and pro tips that can help you level up your life at home. I love peeling back the curtain on the myriad fascinating ways people live at home, and relish writing and editing narrative essays, special content packages, and stories that answer that question you’ve always had. When I’m not editing a feature or chasing a hot tip about how to live your best life at home, you can find me rearranging my furniture, perusing a local bookstore (even though I’ve run out of shelf space), writing a newsletter about overthinking pop culture, or taking a veryyy long walk around the city.
