If you’re wondering if you really need a plant for your dorm room, let D’Asia English (@thesianei on TikTok) and her freshman dorm at Tennessee State University answer that question for you. Her leafy artificial potted plant lends greenhouse vibes to a zen space punctuated by bold decor moments, like fuchsia throw pillows and a cheetah print rug. Lots of great organizers keep the clutter to a minimum, too! Here’s what D’Asia has to say about her room.
D’Asia’s Space
What is your space best known for? Right now we don’t have visitation, but when we did, it was definitely the hangout spot for a couple of days. It’s rare that I’m in my dorm, but when I am, it’s definitely become more of a space to relax and wind down!
What was the biggest challenge in decorating your space? My roommate had a bit more of a light pink, girly glam aesthetic compared to me. I wanted to prevent our sides from clashing, so I reconsidered my layout numerous times! In the end, I realized that as long as we had one color that sort of went together, we would be okay, so I ended up buying a rug that matched both of our aesthetics to bring our vibes together.
D’Asia’s Style
How would you describe your personal home style? I would say whimsical, with a mix of Black Nouveau, was my goal for my dorm! I’ve loved plants and nature in general since I was little, so I wanted it to slightly reflect that in a cute, cool way, and of course I LOVE cheetah print!
What is your favorite element of your space? I love the mix of the cheetah print comforter and fuchsia-colored sheets. I feel like it’s such a uniquely feminine combination!
D’Asia’s Budget
In an effort to remove the stigma associated with talking about money in college, we’re asking students to share how they plan and budget for their space.
Do you have anyone helping to fund your housing? Yes! I’m lucky enough to have a mom who strives to make sure I’m taken care of.
How much did it cost to decorate your space? I would say around $1,000 to $1,500.
Do you have anyone helping to fund your decor? My entire family has had a hand in funding my room!
Do you pay for your living expenses? Partially.
How do you earn your income? Side hustle/part-time job.
What was your biggest splurge for this space and how much did it cost? Definitely my headboard! It was $200.
What was your best budget find for this space and how much did it cost? My trash can, surprisingly. It was originally $70, and I found it for $20.
D’Asia’s Advice
What small space tips do you have? It’s super important to invest in tiny organizing bins to place in your drawers/closet. It makes finding things so much easier and keeps your mind clear. I also recommend scheduling a day with your roommate to clean. For us, it’s Sundays. We do laundry, mop the floor, and reorganize our sides of the room. We’ve found it’s so much easier than one of us cleaning on a Wednesday when the other is tired or not in the headspace for it, and the other cleaning on a Saturday right before we make a mess of the room again.
What was your proudest DIY? I was very set on making my headboard work; however, we weren’t allowed to use adhesive due to the paint. I was able to work around it by sort of rigging it with cardboard and bubble wrap to create a barrier between the wall and the headboard. It only took about 20 minutes to figure out, thanks to my beautiful mom and aunt!
