I Tried Starbucks’ New S’mores Drink Lineup, and This Is the Coffee I’d Order Again (It’s Like a Campfire Treat in a Cup!)
There’s something so nostalgic about s’mores. I always associate them with summer camp, family barbecues, and late-night study breaks at college (my school had fire pits outside the dorms), but I rarely get to eat them anymore. So I got super nostalgic when I saw Starbucks’ new S’mores drink collection.
It includes the returning S’mores Frappuccino and a new S’mores Cold Brew, both of which I got to taste at a Starbucks preview event, and I was definitely surprised by which one I like the most. Here’s what to know about Starbucks’ S’mores drinks and what I thought about these summer sips.
What Are Starbucks’ New S’mores Drinks?
Starbucks’ S’mores drink collection includes the returning S’mores Frappuccino, which debuted in 2015 and has been on “a six-year hiatus,” the new S’mores Cold Brew with Marshmallow Cold Foam, and the new Iced S’mores Chai. I was so excited about this release because although Starbucks’ new refreshers are perfectly cool for a summer day, sometimes I still find myself craving a classic coffee-based drink. These campfire-inspired drinks arrive in stores on July 1, but Starbucks Rewards members get early access on June 30.
According to Starbucks, the S’mores Frappuccino is a “nostalgic blend of marshmallow-flavored whipped cream, milk chocolate sauce, and graham cracker flavor layered with coffee and ice,” while the cold brew is a regular Starbucks Cold Brew topped with marshmallow cold foam, a chocolate drizzle, and graham cracker pieces. The Iced S’mores Chai, which I haven’t tried yet, is a “chai tea infused with cozy spices, blended with toasted marshmallow, milk chocolate sauce, and graham cracker.”
My Honest Review of Starbucks’ S’mores Cold Brew
I tried the S’mores Cold Brew with Marshmallow Cold Foam first, and I was so impressed by how well the flavors blended together. The chocolate drizzle tasted perfectly sweet with the creamy marshmallow cold foam, which balanced out the crisp, slightly bitter flavor of the cold brew. While it didn’t taste exactly like a s’more, the sweet chocolate and marshmallow flavors were reminiscent of the classic summer dessert.
The drink also looked perfectly cozy, with the thick layer of foam sandwiched between the warm colors of the coffee and the crosshatch of chocolate drizzle. It was my favorite sip at the Starbucks preview tasting I attended, and it also took the top spot for a couple other people I chatted with at the event.
My Honest Review of Starbucks’ S’mores Frappuccino
I tried the S’mores Frappuccino after the cold brew, and I was caught off guard by how mellow the flavor was in comparison. The only other Frappuccino I had ever had was when I tried the incredibly sweet Unicorn Frappuccino in middle school, so I assumed the S’mores Frappuccino would be very similar.
The sweetness of the marshmallow whipped cream was less concentrated than the cold foam on the S’mores Cold Brew (especially without the chocolate drizzle), though the graham cracker topping gave it a nice texture. The drink itself tasted like a vanilla milkshake with a hint of coffee, graham cracker, and chocolate. It tasted very milky, but I’d much prefer that to if it was overpoweringly chocolate-flavored.
I’m not sure how the original 2015 S’mores Frappuccino tasted, but I was pleasantly surprised that the drink wasn’t sickly sweet. As far as the s’more comparison, this sip was heavy on the graham cracker flavor.
My Final Thoughts on Starbucks’ New S’mores Drinks
Overall, I much preferred the new S’mores Cold Brew with Marshmallow Cold Foam, though I enjoyed trying both drinks! I will definitely be ordering the cold brew again.
