As soon as temperatures start to drop, I turn into a total homebody: living in sweats and fuzzy socks, swapping my iced coffee for hot tea, and spending way more time curled up in bed. This fall, I wanted to take my bed setup to the next level without spending any money on new pillows and blankets. Enter the viral “potato bed,” a TikTok-approved hack that transforms your current bedding into the ultimate cozy cocoon (for free).

What Is a “Potato Bed,” Anyway?

The “potato bed” is the TikTok-viral trend for setting up your bedding and sheets in a way that creates an incredibly comfy space to doze off in or just lounge. It uses what you already have to create a snug “potato bed” that feels like being wrapped in a giant hug. It’s not clear exactly why it’s called a potato bed, but it likely gets its name due to the final result looking slightly like an opened baked potato.

TikTok creator @secretlifeeee123 helped spark the trend after posting a video in late October 2025 of their ultra-cushy creation, using just a few simple items: a fitted sheet, some pillows, and a few soft blankets. That video has amassed 15.8 million likes so far, and the “potato bed” hashtag has almost 800 posts under it on TikTok, so the spud-inspired trend is quickly growing in popularity.

How to Make Your Own “Potato Bed”

The concept is simple but genius, and the best part is you can re-create it with things you already own. Here’s how:

  • Step 1: Start with a fitted sheet, but instead of stretching it tightly over your mattress, lay it loosely on top of your comforter, bottom side up.
  • Step 2: Stuff pillows around the edges of the fitted sheet to create a puffy border with a soft, concave center.
  • Step 3: Layer in blankets at the base of the fitted sheet and fill any gaps with extra pillows or throws.
  • Step 4: Top it all off with one final blanket you can use to cover yourself for that perfectly cozy, potato-like pouch to cozy up in.

The result? A warm, dreamy cocoon that feels like sleeping in the clouds.

People on TikTok are obsessed with the potato bed trend, commenting things like “I love it, thank you” and “I NEED TO TRY THIS,” while others claim they’ve been making similar bed setups like this for years, just under different names, like the nest bed or cloud bed.

What Is a “Bed Nest”?

Some creators, like @juliewise4 swear by the “bed nest” as the ultimate home base for doing absolutely nothing — in the best way. It’s pretty much like a potato bed, but it uses a comforter as the base instead of a fitted sheet. To make one, lay a comforter on top of your bed and fold the edges inward to create a soft border. Tuck blankets into each side, then layer another blanket or two on top. Pile on your favorite pillows, add a cozy throw, and maybe even diffuse some essential oils or crack open your favorite book. The result? A perfectly plush nest bed, ideal for your next day off.

What Is a “Cloud Bed”?

The “cloud bed” can refer to a couple of different TikTok-viral concepts. One version is a specific type of bed frame that gives your setup a soft, cloudlike look. Most “cloud beds” you see online are plush, white platforms that extend beyond the edges of the mattress, creating a dreamy, floating effect. The other kind of cloud bed involves using comfort-boosting add-ons like a foam mattress topper, plush mattress topper, and supersoft sheets.

Whether you’re team potato, nest, or cloud, these trends all share the same goal: creating the coziest, comfiest bed possible. Personally, I’ll be buried in blankets pretending I’m a baked potato until finals are over.
