Even though we’re still over a month away from Thanksgiving, that delicious spread of cozy, comforting foods is all I’ve got on my mind. I’m actually hosting a Friendsgiving in just a few weeks, so the familiar flavors are all I’m thinking about. And it looks like I’m not the only one.

In late October, Lay’s released new limited-edition chip flavors that are undeniably full of Thanksgiving vibes: Roasted Holiday Turkey and Cheddar Scalloped Style Potatoes. I got my hands on a few bags and had to try them out immediately. Here’s my honest review.

Lay’s New Roasted Holiday Turkey Flavored Chips

Roasted turkey slathered in gravy might not be everyone’s favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal, but it is mine. So I was very excited to try this chip myself. I don’t feel like I’m eating a turkey-flavored chip, but more of a well-seasoned stuffing. I checked the ingredient list to see what gave the chips that familiar flavor and saw turkey broth powder, thyme, onion powder, and paprika. The thyme was definitely what I was tasting that reminded me of my mom’s Thanksgiving turkey and dressing (we’re a dressing household where it’s made in a casserole dish instead of a stuffing house that’s made directly in the turkey cavity).

I offered the new flavors to everyone in the office and got some serious love for the turkey flavor. Brian said it reminded him of a BBQ chip, but without the sweetness of brown sugar or ketchup. Another taster said that he didn’t get much actual turkey flavor from it, but it reminded him of a delicious, well-seasoned brine or herb mix “in a good way.”

Lay’s New Cheddar Scalloped Style Potatoes Flavored Chips

The Cheddar Scalloped Style potato chips were my favorite of the two. It’s a little meta for a potato chip to be flavored like another type of potato, but here we are. I loved how cheesy and herby these chips were, and I wasn’t the only one. Assistant Culinary Producer Topher Leo said these were also his favorite of the pair; they reminded him of Lay’s sour cream and cheddar flavor.

I agree that I definitely get that strong cheddar flavor, but there are even stronger notes of Parmesan cheese. Another thing we both noted about this chip flavor was all the herbs. There’s parsley, thyme, and rosemary in these chips — exactly what many people add to their scalloped potatoes. And you can even see the small green flakes on the chips themselves. This was a chip flavor that I had trouble walking away from. You know the feeling when you keep telling yourself just one more handful, and you go in for a few more? That was me. These chips definitely get my stamp of approval, and maybe I’ll end up serving a bag at my upcoming Friendsgiving.

In addition to these two limited-time flavors, Lay’s is bringing a breakfast favorite to the chip aisle starting November 8: Maple Bacon. And brand isn’t stopping there. Lay’s is transforming its salty bites into a sweet treat with wavy chips dipped in milk chocolate and wavy chips dipped in a Dubai-style dark chocolate topping. I need a few of those bags when they’re available, too!
