Every dorm needs some kind of board — cork board, memory board, magnet board — to hold photos, mementos, notes, or even build out a mood board. It’s practically a dorm room essential at this point. Lately, I’ve been seeing a sleek, shiny take on the traditional wall staple: a metal board that’s all over Pinterest and other social feeds.

What Is the Metal Magnet Board Trend?

I’ve seen so many videos of people making their own magnet board out of a sheet of steel from the hardware store and a frame from IKEA, and other videos of people styling their boards — I love how this creator redesigns their board each month to fit a new theme.

While this DIY is totally doable, the fun part is really decorating the magnet board itself. In her TikTok video, Jane Zhao (@janeezhao) shares how you can add washi tape, fabric, magnets, or even hook magnets to show off pictures, to-do lists, keychains, notes, or any memories of home.

I absolutely love this trend because you can use it to personalize your dorm and make it feel like your space. If you have dry-erase markers, you can create a calendar or write reminders — you can even turn it into a mood board with magazine cutouts or whatever else you have. There are so many ways to get creative with a metal magnet board, and it can also double as the cutest decor, which is why it’s truly a must-have in a small space like a dorm.

4 Metal Magnet Boards to Shop

If you want to try the metal magnet board trend in your room and the DIY is a little too involved, shop these ready-to-hang options instead. Just be sure to check the weight of the board and secure it to your wall with Command Strips that can hold the weight of the display.
