Mavis Sumner’s (@mavissumnerr on TikTok and Instagram) dorm at Georgia College and State University is exactly the kind of room I imagine Daphne from Bridgerton would have thrived in if she went to college in 2026. It’s styled to perfection and full of soft details that imbue a modern coquette vibe. I love the lace accents, bows, and floral touches, as well as the pink-and-blue color palette that carries throughout the space to make it “as cozy and comfortable as possible,” according to Mavis.

Mavis’ Space

How did you end up in this space? At my college, freshmen have the option of living directly on campus in the dorms, or off-campus in the school-owned apartments. When my roommate and I were deciding between those options, we ultimately chose to live in the dorm for the convenience of the location and for the challenge of making a small space into our own! We knew the floor plan ahead of time, and used this to our advantage when planning exactly how to arrange our room.

What do you love most about your space now that you’ve made it your own? One of the main things I love about our space is the way we arranged our furniture. It gave us all the room needed to make it as cozy and comfortable as possible. We were able to add a mini kitchen space, as well as a reading nook with a bookshelf and couch. We also enjoyed creating a color scheme and floral theme in the room that brings us both joy. We had such a fun time picking out little decorations leading up to moving in, and seeing it all come together on move-in day was simply magical. Overall, I feel like we made the most out of this small space; it really is my home away from home, thanks to our careful planning and thoughtful decorating.

What is your space best known for? My dorm room is definitely a go-to hangout spot for my friend group! The space is a great place for a variety of activities, including movie nights, snack breaks, and sleepovers. My room has a foldout couch that provides a very comfy place to sleep or watch a movie. My roommate and I like to keep all of our lamps on to create a warm and cozy environment. We also keep our snack cart stocked with all of our favorite sweets and salties. Overall, my room serves as the go-to place for all things relaxing and unwinding.

Mavis’ Style

What is your personal style? A few words/phrases to describe my personal style would be shades of pinks and blues, floral, pastel, clean, aesthetic, bows/ribbons, coquette, bright, warm, summery. I draw lots of my inspiration from Pinterest and TikTok trends. I love everything girly and glam. I like my spaces to be very light and warm, with lots of natural lighting.

What’s your favorite element of your space? My favorite part of my room is the folding sofa bed that I got from Amazon! I highly recommend having as many seating options as you can. The couch can be so helpful when guests are over, or when I don’t want to crawl into bed! It acts as a sort of reading nook, where I can comfortably read, work on my computer, or relax after class. My roommate and I fold it out to fit both of us during a movie night or when we have a friend spending the night with us. It was affordable for me, and it fits perfectly in the small space.

What’s your proudest DIY or product hack? My proudest project in my room is the DIY bulletin board. On my board, I showcase all of my friends and family, as well as some images/phrases that are important to me! It was so fun to customize it with different fabrics, lace, and ribbon to make it personal! My roommate and I split the cost of materials, and the project probably cost around $30 each, and took us about an hour to create. We think they turned out very cute and added some personality to the wall. They were the perfect opportunity to show our individual styles and include our favorite pictures/people.

Mavis’ Advice

What was your biggest challenge in decorating your space? My biggest challenge was planning how to arrange my furniture in the small space. Knowing that I was moving my whole life into a shared dorm room, I was slightly overwhelmed when thinking about finding a place for everything. Luckily, my school provided the floor plan along with the dimensions of the furniture provided, so I was able to get a better idea of what could fit where. Using those dimensions, I created a digital mockup of my room on the Room Planner app and played around with different arrangements.

Using this app is not necessary, but it was certainly fun to get a vision of what the room would possibly look like. Although I consider the layout my biggest challenge, on move-in day there was a lot more room than I thought there would be, so I recommend not stressing too much about fitting everything. Using lots of storage, fitting all of my belongings was easy!

Do you have any small-space tips you swear by? My biggest piece of advice is to have as many storage places in your room as possible. I keep most of my clothes, sheets, towels, etc., in drawers under my bed, and simply cover them all up with a bed skirt. My bedside table and desk also have lots of places to store miscellaneous items, overall keeping the space organized and tidy while also holding all of my personal belongings.

I would also recommend using a metal storage shelf to create a pantry. With mine, I was able to stack my microwave over my fridge, and bins of food and plates/utensils above that. This is just another example of maximizing storage in a small space! One last quick piece of advice is to collect items for your dorm slowly throughout time, not all at once right before moving in. Whenever I was shopping at places like Target or T.J. Maxx, I’d always check a few dorm necessities off the list! This way, it’s not as overwhelming as thinking about everything you need at once, and it feels like less money spent too.
