There are so many dorm room ideas out there, but somewhere between your tenth late-night scroll and fifth Pinterest board, it can all start to blur together. Luckily, there’s a new dorm trend on campus, and this one doesn’t make you choose between a put-together style and a space teeming with quirky details. We’re calling it “varsity whimsy.”

This look pulls from two aesthetics that have been quietly taking over. On one side, there’s the rise of all things whimsical: From declaring 2026 “the year of whimsy,” to topping iced coffees with sprinkles, to making paper chains and hanging them around the room, people have been seeking ways to take life less seriously and have more fun with the mundanities of daily routine, including in their decor. The internet is buzzing, too: #whimsical has racked up over 2.5 million posts across Instagram and TikTok, proving that people are leaning into creativity and playfulness more than ever.

On the other side, there’s that classic collegiate aesthetic. Think: plaid patterns, classic stripes, varsity jackets, vintage sports gear, and broader cultural nods to old-school prep like Ralph Lauren holiday campaigns, equestrian-inspired decor, and the polished nostalgia of Kennedy-era style. Even celebrity moments, like Taylor Swift’s Polo Ralph Lauren proposal dress, hint at this wider preppy comeback.

Now, they’re meeting in the middle, and it just works. Varsity whimsy feels fresh but familiar, structured but still fun. It’s the kind of trend that doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is exactly why it stands out. Want to learn how to make varsity whimsy your own next semester? What Is “Varsity Whimsy”?

While whimsy has already been huge, we’re predicting that students will imbue their dorms with even more of it next year, sewing moments of magic into their spaces with all kinds of garlands, air-dry clay creations, button-embellished throw pillows, star patterns, bow accents, and craft-forward details that feel handmade and slightly imperfect. Students and young designers are gravitating toward spaces that feel whimsical in a broader sense, where color, craft, and playful energy are part of everyday life.

Meanwhile, the rising popularity of collegiate heritage style taps into a collective nostalgia, reviving classic patterns, vintage sports motifs, and old-school campus energy that feel both aspirational and cozy.

Interior designer Pamela Perras notes that students are “moving away from trend-driven spaces” in favor of ones that feel “collected and lived-in.” She points to the rise of retro academic details — like antique-style lamps, stacks of well-loved books, and deeper, moodier hues — as a “key influence shaping this moment.” She says it’s less about decorating for the algorithm and more about “creating a space that feels comforting, expressive and personal,” a shift she’s seeing as more students gravitate toward rooms that really feel like them, rather than something pulled from a trend cycle.

Here’s Why It’s Trending

Varsity whimsy blends the looseness and charm of handmade or visually playful decor with the tailored prep of classic collegiate style. It pulls in familiar campus cues (stripes, crests, school colors) and reworks them through a more cheerful, colorful, personal lens.

“Whimsy softens preppy structure,” while preppy “gives whimsy a framework,” says Stephanie Mazzei, who works in commercial interior design at Wayfair, explaining why the combination feels so balanced.

This mashed-up aesthetic is especially great for dorm life, where you have to fit so many facets of yourself into one small room: Feel energized and cozy, hang out with friends and have solo relaxing time, study hard and daydream to your heart’s content.

Blended styles like varsity prep and a whimsical flourish can help ensure you’re pulling in only the elements that speak to you, rather than copy and pasting a pristine and predestined moodboard. “People, especially students, want their spaces to feel personal and a little imperfect,” says Malak Bellajdel, architect and interior designer at CopperSmith. “There’s been such a long stretch of everything looking very polished and minimal, and now the pendulum is swinging back toward creativity and individuality.”

“It’s no longer about having the ‘perfect’ room,” says Bellajdel. “It’s about having one that feels like you.” Which, honestly, is exactly the energy college decorating should have.

How to Try Out the “Varsity Whimsy” Trend in Your Dorm

If you’re into this look but don’t know where to begin, here’s the good news: The varsity whimsy trend is very forgiving. There’s no one way to do it, and that’s kind of the whole appeal.

“I always think the easiest way to approach a trend like this is to start small and layer it in,” says Bellajdel. First choose something classic, like maybe some navy bedding, a striped throw, or an inherited quilt. From there, you build. Slowly. Casually. Even if you don’t have everything ready on move-in day, you can collect throughout the semester

Then, bring in plenty of primary shades, like reds, blues, and yellows that feel a little nostalgic (in a construction paper, elementary school kind of way), and consider balancing them with deeper tones like forest green or burgundy. It should feel collegiate, but not overly coordinated.

From there, open up your Pinterest and TikTok saves and gather your craft supplies for some DIYs. “Add color and handmade pieces gradually — garlands, painted frames, mixed textures,” says Mazzei. There’s endless potential to bring your analog hobbies into your space and really make it feel like yours. You could hang some paper chains across your ceiling, make a customized felt pennant (or buy one to save some time), or embroider an old wooden tennis racket with your initial or a meaningful design. None of it needs to be flawless, and in fact, it’s better if it’s not.

That’s the beauty of varsity whimsy. “It’s perfect for college students because dorms are temporary, budgets are tight, and identity is constantly evolving — this style naturally invites experimentation without a lot of pressure,” says Mazzei.

Another bit of inspo? Try a hobby wall. Seriously, if you do one thing, make it this. Rather than ready-made dorm wall art, try hanging a cluster of things that represent some piece of your personality, like a license plate from your home state, your mom’s old tennis racket (or your own!), family photos — or anything that feels personal, a little nostalgic, and makes you happy to look at.

Above all, keep it flexible. This trend isn’t about committing to a single look — it’s about building a space that evolves with you.
