Even after working as an editor in the home design space for four-plus years, as a Dorm Therapy editor, I still see new details in every single dorm tour that inspire me, whether it’s a ceiling canopy made of crepe paper or a dedicated matcha cart. What I love most is how, rather than shrinking trends down to fit within a dorm, if anything, students dial them up to make more of a statement. In a smaller space, every item carries even more weight to show off a piece of your personality, hobbies, or style.

When the Dorm Therapy team got together to forecast the biggest 2026–2027 academic year trends — tapping the style, shopping, social media, and pop culture members of our team, and consulting outside design experts, too —  we identified so many kinds of decor we love and can’t wait to spot in dorm tours next year. From cinched bedding to animal printed items, here are some of our favorite pieces to shop.

Melody Cinched Core Duvet Cover
$99

If you don't already have cinched bedding on your dorm vision board, it’s time to add it. We’ve been seeing frills, ruffles, and ruching in new home design drops everywhere, from lampshades to bedding. Apartment Therapy style editor Emma Dangel calls this the “duvet of [her] dreams,” thanks to its “puffy cloud” appearance and the cute bow tie details. It comes in a dozen colors and takes on a whole new look with each hue, though if you’re looking for a pop of pink, we love this one. Hot tip: It comes in twin XL, but if you size up to the full/queen, you can let it hang over the side of your mattress like a makeshift bed skirt.

Savannah Rug, 5' 3 x 8'
$305$109

Animal prints are always in style to some degree, but especially with the resurgence of the Y2K aesthetic, we’ve noticed leopard, tiger, and zebra prints taking over the fashion world — and we don’t think this trend is going anywhere. This black-and-white zebra-inspired area rug is a chic way to try the trend while still setting a neutral color palette both you and your roommate can match.

No Nails Metal Plug In Sconce
$99

Listen, lamps and twinkle lights are wonderful, but sconces just bring that je nais se quois into a space. Dorm-friendly sconces are becoming more and more available, meaning you don’t have to use any screws to mount them on the wall — simply peel-and-stick them into place. This one from PB Teen is great because it plugs in, meaning you don’t have to worry about recharging it when a battery runs low.

Pillowcase Pair
$49

These pillowcases combine three trends we’re excited about: icy blue, high-contrast color combos, and bold stripes. Especially when you’re aiming to pack as much of a style punch as possible into minimal square feet, a small element that merges several trends is a win.

Celestial Chain Wall Garland
$25

Classic paper garlands were everywhere this year, as people embraced DIY decor and their inner child, and sought to add some good old-fashioned whimsy to their lives. Next up, we expect to see garlands made of less temporary materials: felted wool crocheted chains, quilted fabric, mixed metals, you name it.

MEGATEK Portable CD Player Boombox with FM Radio
$52

Physical media like DVDs and CDs have been making a comeback for a minute now, and so has the accompanying 2000s tech. We’re spotting iPods, DVD players, wired headphones, even landline telephones. And, of course, boom boxes. This one from Jensen comes in three colors: a frosted blue, classic black, or retro bronze.

Button Round Floor Pillow
$69$35

In case you needed a sign that buttons are about to be a trending motif, look to Emma Chamberlain’s new collab with West Elm. From button wall art to button coasters to corduroy button throw pillows, the collection is full of the kitschy detail. For dorm living, we love this oversized floor pillow from Urban Outfitters that we used in a recent Dorm Therapy photoshoot — it’s such fun seating to have for when friends come hang out in your room, and I can’t get over how perfect the shade of blue is.

Pendleton Four Square Quilt Set, Full/Queen
$319$269

If you want to try out the “varsity whimsy” aesthetic, making your bed with a quilt can instantly introduce that classic-meets-quirky look. This one from Pendleton features bold colors you can carry throughout your dorm design. Besides looking incredibly cozy, quilts have a profound history, and come with the added bonus of not having to figure out how to stuff your comforter into a duvet cover every time you do laundry.

Kodhi Mini Table Lamp
$39

Polka dots never go out of style, but they are definitely popping up more and more recently. This petite table lamp is a fun way to bring some spots into your space while still leaving plenty of room to mix in other patterns — because in 2026, the more patterns, the merrier.

RÅGRUND Cart
$80$60

Utility carts are a staple of dorm organization. You’re probably used to seeing classic metal versions, but this bamboo iteration from IKEA is just as practical and, while it’s a little more expensive, will likely mesh a little better with your thrifted decor and vintage details. We’ve noticed college students outfitting pieces like this as niche beverage stations — like matcha carts or coffee carts — but the possibilities are endless.

Magical Garden V Wall Tapestry
$35$25

Tapestries are a lightweight, cost-effective way to cover a bunch of blank wall at once, and they make an amazing headboard alternative, too. Choose a tapestry that also jumpstarts your personal art collection when you buy from Society6, which has hundreds of options featuring work by independent artists.

Botanical Hanging Wall Art
$86$43

Whether you’re looking to pick up a new analog hobby or just bring some natural beauty into your room, pressed flowers are the increasingly popular answer. Sandwich them between paper until dry and then carefully place them into your frame of choice, or buy a ready-made piece like this one from Etsy, which comes in a romantic gold-chain frame.

Lifestyle Editor, Special Projects

The first thing I ever said I wanted to be when I was young was an interior designer. But, after years of waiting by the mailbox for my favorite magazines and seizing every opportunity to write, I decided to pursue journalism. I started my career at Boston magazine, before pivoting into strategic communications, and coming back to journalism when I joined Apartment Therapy in 2022 — the perfect union of my childhood dream and adulthood passion. I edit the Life section, covering wellness, money, career, small-space living, mental health, and all the items, habits, hacks, and pro tips that can help you level up your life at home. I love peeling back the curtain on the myriad fascinating ways people live at home, and relish writing and editing narrative essays, special content packages, and stories that answer that question you’ve always had. When I’m not editing a feature or chasing a hot tip about how to live your best life at home, you can find me rearranging my furniture, perusing a local bookstore (even though I’ve run out of shelf space), writing a newsletter about overthinking pop culture, or taking a veryyy long walk around the city.
