17 College Care Package Items Students Will Love Getting in the Mail (Perfect for Finals!)
College care packages are one of the easiest ways to send comfort from miles away. Whether your student is feeling homesick, drowning in assignments, or just missing home, a thoughtful care package can make their day. My mom always sends me a care package for basically every holiday, from Halloween to Hanukkah to Valentine’s Day, and it always reminds me that I’m supported — even from far away.
To help figure out what students actually want, we asked Dorm Therapy’s Instagram followers for some of the best care package items they’ve gotten. With that intel, combined with mine and my friends’ college experiences, here are the best college care package ideas students will truly love receiving.
What Makes a Good College Care Package?
The best college care packages include a mix of useful and comforting items; things students will actually use day-to-day plus small treats that make dorm life feel warmer and more personal. Practical items like cleaning essentials and school supplies always come in handy, but sentimental touches like photos from home can mean even more. You really can’t go wrong with snacks — especially if they’re foods students can’t easily get at school.
At the end of the day, the best care packages feel tailored to the student receiving them. My favorite care packages are the ones filled with things that make sense for the moment, like holiday treats, cozy essentials, or self-care items during stressful weeks.
Best Self-Care Care Package Items
College can be chaotic and stressful, so self-care items are always a great choice for a care package. These products help students decompress, reset after a hard week, and feel more at home in their dorm.
Cozy Essentials
A fuzzy blanket is one of the best “comfort” items you can include in a care package. It instantly makes a dorm room feel warmer and more inviting. Students also mentioned they love receiving pillows for that extra-homey feeling. Warm socks are the definition of cozy, and students always need them (especially when their dorm temperature is less than ideal). You can never go wrong with cozy socks from Old Navy. They’re cheap, cozy, and always get used.
Face Masks
Face masks are easy and affordable self-care treats that make students feel refreshed after a long week of classes. They’re also perfect for a cozy dorm night in. My friends and I really love the Loops face masks — they’re super-hydrating and easy to toss into a care package.
Skincare
Several students said skincare is one of their favorite things to receive — it feels practical and pampering at the same time. Including a few skincare staples (like moisturizer, cleanser, or pimple patches) is a guaranteed care package win. Some favorites include the Good Molecules Lightweight Daily Moisturizer, the Mad Hippie Jelly Cleanser, and the Mighty Patch pimple patches from Hero Cosmetics.
Body Creams and Scrubs
Body creams and scrubs are a really underrated care package item because they make everyday routines feel more luxurious. They’re also especially appreciated during winter months when skin gets super dry. Some favorites I swear by are the Youth To The People Superberry Firm + Glow Dream Body Butter for hydration, and Tree Hut body scrubs for gentle exfoliation.
Best Food & Snack Care Package Items
Food is one of the most requested care package categories for a reason. Snacks disappear fast in college. Including a mix of comfort treats, quick meals, and drinks makes the care package feel both exciting and useful. One of my friends even gets home-cooked meals from her mom in Tupperware, and it always makes her whole day.
Breakfast Foods
Breakfast foods are especially helpful because students often skip breakfast when they’re busy or dining hall hours don’t line up with their schedule. Items like instant oatmeal, breakfast bars, or mini cereal packs can genuinely make mornings easier. Kodiak Cups are a go-to in my friend group for quick, filling dorm breakfasts.
Grab-and-Go Snacks
Even basic snacks are always appreciated, especially during late-night studying or between classes. Think: easy-to-grab items like granola bars, chips, crackers, trail mix, or cookies. Trader Joe’s is my go-to one-stop shop for care package snacks. Everything’s cheap, fun, and perfect for grabbing between classes or during late-night study sessions.
Ramen Squares or Packages
Ramen is a classic college comfort food: cheap, filling, and perfect for dorm life. Ramen squares are easy to pack, and they make a great “emergency meal” for hectic weeks. You can never go wrong with classic Maruchan ramen; it’s basically a college survival food.
Sweet Treats
Candies, chocolate, and cookies are fun care package staples. One student specifically shouted out Mike and Ike. Other favorites include Stroopwafels, Welch’s Fruit Snacks, and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups from Trader Joe’s. They’re a simple add-on that makes the box feel more cheerful and exciting.
Go-To Beverages
One student said their mom sends Liquid I.V. packets, which are great for travel days or when a student needs a little extra hydration. Tea is an ideal cozy addition, especially during stressful weeks (it’s also helpful if a student is feeling under the weather and wants something warm and comforting).
Best Sentimental Care Package Items
Some of the best care package items aren’t “products” at all — they’re meaningful touches that make students feel seen, supported, and less homesick. Adding something personal can mean a lot.
Printed Photos
One of the sweetest responses we got was “photos of my dogs!!!” and honestly, yes. Printed photos of pets, family, friends, or favorite memories are one of the most comforting things to hang up in a dorm.
A Handwritten Note
A handwritten note is simple, but it makes a huge emotional impact. Even just a short message reminding a student you’re proud of them can mean everything during a tough week.
A Small Comfort Item from Home
This could be anything from a keychain, to a small stuffed animal, or a meaningful item that reminds a student of home. If you don’t have access to their actual items from home, sending a Homesick room spray is a thoughtful gesture. These little items can become comforting “good luck charms” during stressful school days.
Best Practical Care Package Items
Practical items are secretly the most helpful care package additions, and students tend to appreciate them even more once they’re living on their own. These are the items that make dorm life easier and prevent stressful last-minute store runs.
School Supplies
Mechanical pencils are a classic practical item that students always use throughout the semester. They’re especially great for students who take lots of notes or have a lot of math and science classes. White-out tape is small but surprisingly helpful for note-taking, planners, and assignments. It’s also one of those random school supplies students always forget to buy until they really need it.
Gift Cards
Gift cards were a top response because they give students flexibility to buy what they actually need. Great options include grocery stores, coffee shops, Target, Amazon, or food delivery apps.
Cleaning Essentials
Cleaning essentials are one of those things students don’t always buy for themselves, but they absolutely need. Think: disinfecting wipes, trash bags, dish soap, paper towels, or laundry detergent pods.
Best Fun Care Package Items
Fun items are great because they help students take real breaks from school and screens. Including an activity gives them something relaxing to do in the dorm that isn’t studying. My friends and I love having little activities like craft kits or journals around for nights when we just want to unwind without scrolling on our phones.
Coloring and Activity Books
One student suggested activities like coloring books, which are perfect for stress relief and downtime. They’re also a cute care package item for winter months when students spend more time indoors. My friends and I love adult coloring books like the ones by Johanna Basford. They’re relaxing, affordable, and perfect for unwinding after a long day of classes.
Puzzles
Puzzles are a cozy dorm activity and a great way to unwind alone or with roommates. They’re especially fun during weekends or snow days when students want something low-key. Galison’s 500-piece puzzles are a go-to for cozy dorm nights.
