Every stellar salad deserves an epic crouton. Sure, you could grab some stale baguettes, pita, or bagels to make your own crunchy topping, but people on social media are discovering that they can use a particularly beloved snack for something 100 times more fun.

The move? To ditch traditional breadcrumbs or croutons for Cheez-Its. The crackers add a nice crunch and cheddar flavor that’ll upgrade any greens.

Cheez-It shared this ingenious breadcrumb hack on Instagram, and people immediately flooded the comments with love for the simple trick. One person wrote, “I have been rendered speechless (rare), and I will not rest until I’ve made this,” while another said, “That literally looks amazing.”

Here’s how to make Cheez-It breadcrumbs: Start by gently crushing a handful of Cheez-Its (you can just throw them in a plastic bag and use a rolling pin to do this!). Then, fry them in a pan with butter, lemon zest, and salt until they’re slightly crispy. Once they’re ready, sprinkle them over your favorite salad — this recipe uses a classic Caesar. To finish it off, top the greens with whole Cheez-Its for extra crunch and texture.

These Cheez-It breadcrumbs aren’t just for a traditional Caesar — they’d be delicious on all kinds of salads, like a bacon Cobb, broccoli ranch, or asparagus prosciutto.

You could also use Cheez-It breadcrumbs on other dishes, too. “Excellent to crust on chicken as well,” one person said.

If you try this hack and end up loving it, the good news is that Cheez-It has so many flavors to experiment with. You could toss the White Cheddar ones on a Caesar salad, or use the Italian Four Cheese crackers as the coating for eggplant Parmesan. The possibilities with this snack are endless.

From the moment I started remixing ramen noodles into gourmet meals and spending hours watching cooking shows as a puny six-year-old, I knew I found a deep passion for food. While I realized — after taking on a two-year high school internship in an award-winning kitchen — that a restaurant wouldn't be my forever home, I knew the world of food would. I graduated from Syracuse University as their first-ever food studies major, researching policies contributing to equitable food systems. From there, I went on to work for various food non-profits, CPGs, farms, and tech companies. Over the past few years, I pivoted to food writing and producing full-time as a freelancer, with words and podcast episodes showing up in Eater, America's Test Kitchen, Cuisine Noir, Serious Eats, Food & Wine, and Food52. I love creating easily digestible (sometimes geeky) but always fun or important news stories and testing recipes in my kitchen.
