The New $6 Frozen Pizza I’ll Be Storing in My Freezer While It’s Still in Stock (I Can’t Believe It Didn’t Exist Sooner)
In my college town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, really good late-night snacks are hard to come by. Most either take too long to make from scratch, or are too expensive to order in regularly. That’s why I always keep a frozen pizza (or two) in my freezer for impromptu movie nights with friends and general snacking.
I’m constantly on the lookout for great frozen pizzas (and, let’s be real, snacks in general). My interest piqued when I saw that Tombstone Pizza launched two new pizzas inspired by … french fries. Yes, you read that right.
I was so excited to taste the Chili Cheese and Bacon Cheddar pizzas (loaded fries and pretty much any pizza are two of my favorite foods). I was lucky enough to get my hands on them before they launch next month. Here’s my full sneak preview.
What You Should Know About Tombstone Loaded French Fry Crust Pizzas
Tombstone’s Loaded French Fry Pizzas aren’t just inspired by loaded fries — they actually feature a crispy potato-based crust that (bonus!) is also gluten-free. The Loaded Bacon Cheddar flavor swaps marinara for a cheddar cheese sauce layered with mozzarella, bacon, and pork belly; the Chili Cheese variety features a hamburger-style chili cheese sauce topped with mozzarella and cheddar, red onion, and parsley.
Both flavors are 18 ounces and will retail for $6.49 each. The pizzas are not currently available for purchase, but are expected to hit select retailers nationwide starting early July through summer.
It’s unclear if they are just here for the season or will join the brand’s cheesy lineup. (I know which one I’m hoping for!)
My Honest Review of Tombstone French Fry Crust Pizzas
Like most frozen pizzas, the instructions were straightforward: I cooked each one at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes, and both came out golden-brown with crispy edges. The Bacon Cheddar flavor did cook slightly faster than the Chilli Cheese, so next time I’d probably cook it for a minute or two less (and just keep an eye on it).
As soon as the pizzas were done, my roommates and I immediately dug in. Each pizza gave a picturesque cheese pull (a plus!), and the crust was crunchy — just like my favorite fries. I personally liked the Chilli Cheese Pizza more than the Bacon Cheddar. It had a kick of heat, and the cheese sauce did not overpower the sausage or make the crust soggy. It really reminded me of great chili cheese fries.
The Bacon Cheddar was still really delicious, but the bacon overpowered the cheddar cheese sauce. It tasted a lot like a bacon pizza, and not much like fries at all.
Both pizzas reminded me of handheld, less-messy versions of loaded fries, and I’ll be patiently waiting to see those purple Chili Cheese boxes pop up in stores in July.
