Living alongside a cheap standing lamp is basically a right of passage. You might have had one in your childhood bedroom, and let’s be real: You might even have one staring at you in your college dorm right now. These lamps definitely prioritize function over form — they’re not exactly cute, but if your space is lacking light, they get the job done just as well as one three times the price.

You gotta work smarter, not harder when you’re living on a budget — and that’s why this lamp hack is genius.

@thedapperdanielle How to make that cheap standing lamp in your home “fancier” real quick! I'm sure someone has already shared this, but its so simple that I feel like more people should know about it!! Shout out to the Dapper Sister, she is the QUEEN of not paying full retail for anything and suggested this to me 🤣 I strive to have her haggling and discount-finding skills! #diy #simplehomedecor #lamp #lamps #lampshade #diyprojects #homedecor #homedecorideas #thatwaseasy #thedapperdanielle #randomthings ♬ Idyllic jazz bossa nova with piano and guitar(1298871) – TAKANORI ONDA

Danielle (@thedapperdanielle) gives viewers a tutorial on the one easy swap you can make to help your boring old standing lamp to look (at least!) 10 times prettier. “Most of you have one of these lamps cause you’re not willing to pay $145 for a random lamp,” the creator says in the video.

How to Upgrade Your Basic Standing Lamp

The first step in the video is optional: If you’ve got a basic black or chrome lamp, you can spray-paint the base whatever color you prefer. “Just don’t spray-paint the top piece, because we’re going to hide it,” Danielle says.

Then find a lampshade in your desired style. Any thrift store like Goodwill or Savers will probably have one, but you can also go to HomeGoods or Target if you want it to be new but still affordable. (Danielle picked up a damaged one from HomeGoods that was on “super discount” and hot-glued it back together.)

The next step couldn’t be easier: Simply place the new lampshade directly on top of the existing plastic shade.

Find a Cute Lampshade for Your Project

Need inspo before getting started? These cute shades are a good place to start:

This lampshade is perfect for people wanting a more vintage cottage core lamp. Its cream and blush neutral floral design is dainty but makes a statement.

I’m obsessed with this shade. I love brown and white gingham. It immediately makes a space feel like a home. So adorable and cozy!

As one commenter on the video said, you’ll have “a cuter lamp by Monday.”

Even though her heart belongs to the ocean, the mountains are becoming a close contender. Her favorite part of living in Burlington, Vermont, for college is its unique coffee shops. Her perfect day would consist of going to a cute café in the morning, then spending the day at the beach swimming and reading, then ending the day by shopping and getting dressed up for a nice dinner downtown. Through Dorm Therapy, Isabel is excited to be a voice for young adults embarking on their college journeys and she hopes to make this big transition of life more comfortable for others in the same place as her.
