Regardless of your dorm room size, chances are you’re likely looking for more space. While there are many tips and organizers out there, one of the best — and simplest — tips comes from my friend’s mom. It’s all about making sure you buy the right closet hooks with multiple offshoots, because they can really make a difference.

In a TikTok video, my friend’s mom and professional organizer Andrea Wolf (@organizedetroit) offered some great tips for making a small dorm closet work for you. One that really stood out to me is to get an over-the-door hook for your closet. It’s important to find one that has multiple hooks, and additional offshoots from those hooks to really maximize space. This simple closet addition could provide nearly a dozen extra hooks you didn’t have before.

She likes this Encozy option sold on Amazon that has 10 offshoots. It’s perfect for heavy sweatshirts, belts, purses, and towels.

You can have the hook facing inside and keep your towels and sweatshirts concealed in the closet. Or, I would probably have this facing out in my room and use it to display my belts and purses for easy access.

If you don’t need as many hooks, Wolf says this Target option is also great and functional for a dorm room because it can also attach to the frame of the bed. This is a great alternative if your door is too thick for the hanger.

The most convenient aspect of these heavy-duty hangers is that there is no installation required. They simply slide right over the closet door or bed frame. I was constantly adding Command hooks to my walls in college; if you’re like me and always adding more hooks to your closets, look no further. These products can give you so many more hangers, without any hassle.
