If your idea of the perfect dorm room is an escape from the chaos of college life, Raylene Telleria (@raylenetelleria on TikTok), a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has some inspiration for you. Raylene’s space makes a convincing case for a cozy reset spot, with her soft glam style coming through with light pink wallpaper, a modern lamp, and plenty of bright, cheerful accents. The standout detail, though, is her DIY feather sign, which mixes beige, pink, and neutral tones for a personal touch that feels totally at home in the space. Here’s what Raylene has to say about her room.

Raylene’s Space

How did you find this space and what drew you to the space you chose? I found this space on my school’s website, and what drew me to it was the fact that it was a close walk to my classes from my off-campus apartment.

What was your first impression of your space? My first impression was that I liked how I had my own bathroom. I love how I have decorated my room and made it my own, and I also love how bright and pink it is because I don’t like dark rooms; they make me sad.

What is your space best known for? My space is more of a peaceful, relaxed wind-down spot. I’m not in my room a lot, but when I am, it is very peaceful and a place to get away when my social battery is running low.

Raylene’s Style

How would you describe your personal home style? I would describe my home style as colorful, bright, and girly. What inspired my design was actually a TikTok video I saw. They had a very similar style, and once I saw it, I immediately fell in love.

Now that you’ve made it your own, what specifically do you love about your space? My favorite thing about my space is probably my wallpaper or lamp. I like how my lamp is kind of modern-looking, and I love how my wallpaper is pink but not too pink; it’s very light, and it doesn’t overpower the room.

What was your proudest DIY? My proudest DIY would probably be my feather sign. I like how it includes beige, pink, and neutral tones. Even though it wasn’t that hard and I looked up a TikTok tutorial, it still took a lot of effort to make.

Raylene’s Budget

In an effort to remove the stigma associated with talking about money in college, we’re asking students to share how they plan and budget for their space.

How much does your housing cost per semester? $4,000-$5,000.

Do you have anyone helping to fund your housing? My parents.

How much did it cost to decorate your space? Around $2,000.

Do you have anyone helping to fund your decor? My parents.

Do you pay for your living expenses? Partially.

How do you earn your income? Part-time job.

What was your biggest splurge for this space and how much did it cost? My wallpaper was probably the biggest expense of the whole place.

What was your best budget find for this space and how much did it cost? I would probably say keeping stuff from my last dorm, so I didn’t have to spend money on new things.

Raylene’s Advice

What was the biggest challenge in decorating your space? The biggest challenge I faced was probably my wallpaper. I bought four big rolls of wallpaper, and that still wasn’t enough to fill up both of my walls, so I had to buy more — which was frustrating because the wallpaper was very expensive — but I felt that it would make my room look more complete.
