I Tried 3 Mango Refreshers from Starbucks, Dunkin’, and McDonald’s, and I’ve Got *Very Specific * Thoughts
I don’t know why, but I’ve never been a coffee drinker. Instead, I’ve turned to the world of refreshers, aka the perfect summer drink to cool you down on a hot day.
According to a 2021 Mashed article, Starbucks was the first company to offer a refresher drink, back in 2012 when the coffee chain launched the Strawberry Acai Refresher. Dunkin’ entered the refresher game in June 2020, and many other fast food chains have created their own lines of refreshers — which for me, as a lover of these fruity concoctions, is great news.
You can even get your fix at McDonald’s now, after the company launched a new line of refreshers and dirty sodas nationwide on May 6, 2026. Even better, Starbucks, Dunkin’, and McDonald’s each have some version of a mango refresher: McDonald’s and Dunkin both offer a Mango Pineapple Refresher, and Starbucks dropped a Mango Strawberry Refresher in April 2026. With such similar flavors available just in time for summer, it felt like my duty as a refresher fan to try them all.
Going into this taste test, I knew that Dunkin and McDonald’s would be a more 1:1 comparison, given that they both have the added pineapple flavor. But, I decided to test out the mango refreshers at all three spots to see what each offers. Each refresher comes with a different default base — lemonade at McDonald’s, iced green tea at Dunkin’, and water at Starbucks — but I decided to do a lemonade base for the first two and a water base for Starbucks (since my online order wouldn’t let me alter it). Here’s what I thought of each one and how they stack up against each other.
My Honest Review of McDonald’s Mango Pineapple Refresher
At first glance, this drink was the most “mango-looking” thanks to its true yellow-orange color. Traditionally, the refresher comes with strawberry bobas that sit at the bottom of the cup, however, the two McDonald’s I went to were both sold out of the boba, which could definitely have affected the taste and color of the drink. The drink is made with a lemonade base as the default, which is how I got it, but you could order it with a water base.
When I took my first sip, the strong taste of mango immediately hit my tongue, and then lingered. I honestly couldn’t taste any pineapple at all, as the mango really overpowered any other flavor. That could be a con if you’re looking for that tart, tropical note, but if you’re a big mango lover, this is the drink for you.
This drink is “moderately caffeinated,” according to the McDonald’s website, which doesn’t list the exact caffeine count, though I couldn’t really detect any effects of the caffeine after drinking it. This was the cheapest drink of the three I ordered, too — the small was $4.05.
My Honest Review of Dunkin’s Mango Pineapple Refresher
I ordered the Dunkin’ refresher with a lemonade base, though the default is green tea. Compared to the other two, the Dunkin’ Refresher was definitely the prettiest. The drink came out with a nice ombre orange color, darker orange on the bottom and more of a yellow color on top.
Despite being the most photogenic sip, I wanted a little more mango flavor to come through as I drank it. It had a super strong pineapple flavor that was almost overpowering — but if you love pineapple, you might really like that. In my effort to even the playing field with a lemonade base, I think I tipped the flavor profile to something a little more tart than I’d prefer.
This refresher has flavors I think I could really enjoy, so if I ordered the drink again, I would ask for the water base instead or maybe try it the default way with iced green tea. This was the second most expensive of the three, with a small ringing up for $5.15.
My Honest Review of Starbucks’ Mango Strawberry Refresher
You have a couple of options when you order this Starbucks refresher. It comes with strawberry pieces by default, though you can opt to add more or remove them entirely, and you can adjust the energy level (either no caffeine, light caffeine, or make it an Energy Refresher by adding 125mg of caffeine). I ordered the drink with the strawberries, the default light caffeine option, and a water base.
Based on the look of the Starbucks drink, I wasn’t sure how I would like it. Compared to the McDonald’s or Dunkin’s refreshers, this one had much more of a translucent pink-orange color, with dried strawberry pieces floating around, which definitely added a summery vibe to the drink.
When I took a sip, I was pleasantly surprised. I preferred the combination of mango and strawberry to the mango-pineapple refreshers, and the ratio of mango to strawberry was perfect — I felt like I was able to taste both equally. I’m not typically a fan of the strawberry pieces in other Starbucks drinks, but I think in this case it really enhanced the mango-strawberry flavor.
It’s worth noting that this was the most expensive of the three, with a grande (small) coming in at $5.25, but I would definitely order this drink again.
The Mango Refresher I’d Order Again (and Again!)
For wanting something refreshing but not too sweet, the Starbucks Mango Strawberry Refresher was my favorite, thanks to the perfectly balanced flavors of mango and strawberry. The strawberries pieces add a fresh fruity element, too, which feels so perfect for a little treat on hot days. Not to mention, this pink-orange drink would look so cute in pictures this summer!
