This Hilarious iPhone Feature Practically Guarantees You’ll Never Be Caught with a Low Battery
I’m not the best with technology, and as a result, I know there are a lot of things my phone can do that I don’t know about or care enough to figure out. But every once in a while, I’ll learn about a fun feature that piques my interest enough to try. One such example? I had no idea you could turn your favorite TikTok sound into an alert for when you charge your phone, until I saw this TikTok video by Claireyoncé (@claire.cundieff).
How to Change Your Phone Charging Sound
Typically, when I plug my phone in to charge, it makes the factory-set chime it defaults to. However, you can actually customize that tone so that when you plug in your phone it plays a silly sound or a brief audio clip that you love. I didn’t even know that was an option!
Not only is this feature a way to add a little extra whimsy to your day, but it can be a fun reminder to charge your phone if you love the sound you’ve picked.
In Claireyoncé’s video, she cites the original creator she saw do this, TeamTaboo, who posted an extremely helpful walkthrough video. Here’s how to do it.
- Figure out what sound you’d like to change your alert to. For some inspiration, it could be your favorite TikTok sound or clip from a song. I chose the sound from the TV show Community that goes, “Troy and Abed in the morning.” (Here’s the TikTok video I used.)
- If you’re using a song, download that audio file to your phone. If you’re using a TikTok sound, download the video to your phone, go into your video folder, and trim it so it’s only as long as you want the sound to be. A helpful tip from TeamTaboo’s video: Save the sound to a separate album so you can find it easily.
- Open the Apple Shortcuts app (or redownload it if you don’t currently have it).
- Navigate to the “automation” icon in the bottom center of the screen.
- Click the “+” button in the upper-righthand corner and search for “charger” and tap on the “charger” option.
- Make sure “is connected” is selected at the top, and then tap “run immediately.”
- Tap “next” and hit “new blank automation” (it might also say “create new shortcut” depending on your iOS) and then search “photos.”
- Find the filter by selecting the album you placed the sound in.
- Then, search “encode media” as a separate action. Select the drop-down menu and toggle on “audio only.”
- Finally, search “play sound” and select that as another new action.
After that, you’ll have a new noise that’ll play every time you charge your phone. Even though I’m not great at implementing iPhone hacks, this was an easy way to customize my phone and make something as basic as charging it a little more fun.
