There’s nothing more frustrating than owning an area rug that’s curling up around the edges.  Not only is it an eyesore, but those wayward corners can (and will!) trip you when you least expect it. You’ve probably tried a ton of fixes (rocks on the corners, anyone?), but nothing seems to make a difference.

That’s why this TikTok video from Rachael Eppley (@hey.im.rach) made me gasp.

Why You Should Try The “Ice Cube Trick”

The creator shows off the most underrated hack of all time: the ice cube trick. “In case your mom didn’t teach you,” Eppley captions the video. The best part: It’s so easy. All you have to do is place an ice cube on each of the corners of your rug, and let it melt. Like magic, those curled edges will flatten out — and stay that way.

(Pro tip: If you have hardwood floors, you can place a towel underneath each corner to prevent potential water damage.)

Also known as the “set it and forget it” method, ice cubes can be used to smooth out rug dents caused by furniture or other things too. Even if your dent hasn’t totally disappeared by the next day, you can use a credit card or fork to give it a quick fluffing, or use your vacuum to fully set the fibers in place.

If this hack doesn’t work for you, one person in the comments also recommends double-sided and non-slip rug grippers or stickers as another solution.

But truly, there’s no better feeling than knowing that the fix to one of your household issues can be found in your fridge. While you’re at it, you should probably try this 15-second trick for removing stubborn stickers from jars, too.

Isabel is an incoming sophomore at the University of Vermont. She is studying public communication. She grew up in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where she frequented the beach often during the summer. Even though her heart belongs to the ocean, the mountains are becoming a close contender. Her favorite part of living in Burlington, Vermont, for college is its unique coffee shops. Her perfect day would consist of going to a cute café in the morning, then spending the day at the beach swimming and reading, then ending the day by shopping and getting dressed up for a nice dinner downtown. Through Dorm Therapy, Isabel is excited to be a voice for young adults embarking on their college journeys and she hopes to make this big transition of life more comfortable for others in the same place as her.
