I’m always on the hunt for cool, compact tech that fits perfectly into my dorm life — and, let’s be honest, actually fits into my dorm room. When I was given the chance to test the HP Sprocket Portable Instant Photo Printer for 2” by 3” pictures, it quickly became one of my favorites. The tiny gadget, which prints photo memories within seconds, is great for crafting for the holidays, sprucing up my space, and creating meaningful keepsakes.

What Is the Sprocket HP Photo Printer?

The Sprocket isn’t just a printer — it’s a portable magic maker. Using Zink (Zero Ink) technology, it produces smudge-proof, 2×3-inch photos that are ideal for DIY projects. Plus, the peel-and-stick backing means no glue or tape is required.

Once you get your Sprocket, you just need to download the Sprocket app and connect the device to your phone via Bluetooth. Then you’re ready to select photos to print anywhere, anytime, whether you’re cozy in your dorm or hanging at your friend’s off-campus apartment — the gadget is only 3.15 inches wide, 4.63 inches long, and less than an inch thick, which means it’s easy to toss in your bag and take with you around campus.

Sprockets come with a USB charging cable (no wall adapter, though) and a starter pack of 10 sheets of photo paper. (You can buy additional packs of 20 sheets or 50 sheets separately.) The ZINK technology means there’s no need for ink cartridges — the color is embedded in the paper, so you’ll never run out of ink!

Budget-Friendly Gift Ideas to Make with the Sprocket

The Sprocket typically costs $79.99 (although it’s currently $67.99 on Amazon), so gifting a Sprocket to all your friends might be a splurge.

Another option: Gift one to yourself (you’re welcome!) and then use it to create thoughtful, affordable presents that leave a lasting impression. Here are just a few ideas for DIY gifts you can create using Sprocket printed photos.

Customized Photo Collages

Arrange mini prints into a framed collage featuring your favorite memories together with your giftee. Add cute captions for extra charm. Budget hack: Pick up thrifted or dollar-store frames to save money.

Memory Jars

Roll up printed photos to place them in a Mason jar alongside tiny trinkets and handwritten notes. It’s a heartfelt gift that’s simple to make.

DIY Planner Stickers

Use the peel-and-stick feature to create photo stickers so friends can decorate their planners and journals. You could gift these alone or alongside a 2025 planner or fresh notebook.

Scrapbook Starter Kits

Print meaningful photos and bundle them with fun craft supplies like washi tape, markers, and decorative paper for a DIY scrapbook kit.

Holiday Photo Ornaments

Transform printed photos into adorable ornaments by attaching them to clear plastic baubles. Add glitter or faux snow on the inside of the ornaments for a festive touch.

Photo Garlands

Clip photos to a string of fairy lights or colorful twine for personalized room decor that doubles as a gift.

Whether you gift the Sprocket or the creations you make with it, I feel that the Sprocket is an investment that keeps giving back. It’s compact, dorm-friendly, and ideal for turning your creativity into heartfelt presents or stylish decor. Plus, it’s so easy to use that I basically wonder how I ever lived without it.
