College sophomore Taylor (@Userisjustagirl3000 on TikTok) has a crafty side, and it definitely shows in her dorm. The criminal justice major, who goes to an HBCU in the DMV area, took the time to really personalize her space in her on-campus apartment. Case in point: her handmade skateboard wall art.

Taylor went into the decorating process with a vision — a sophisticated and chic space — and planned her room’s decor for months before she moved in. Check out how she created this relaxing space with soft lighting, cozy textures, and eye-catching wall art (yes, skateboards can be chic)!

Taylor’s Space

How’d you end up in this space? I just submitted a housing application and applied for the specific space. It is an upperclassman dorm.

Now that you’ve made the space your own, what specifically do you love about it? I love my skateboards. It’s my favorite part of my space because it ties it all together. My skateboards are custom and handmade. The vinyl decals feature some of my favorite artists and wallpapers.

What’s your space best known for? My skateboard art, and my cheetah print pillows, and books. My place is a great space to relax and unwind.

Taylor’s Style

Define your personal home style: Sophisticated, chic, classy, textured. Pinterest inspired my design style, picking different pictures and putting them all together to create one.

What’s your favorite element of your space? My custom, handmade skateboard art.

What’s your proudest DIY or product hack? My skateboards. In total it took me one hour to custom-make them. I will be opening up an Etsy to sell them soon!

Taylor’s Budget

To remove the stigma associated with talking about money in college, we’re asking students to share how they plan and budget for their space.

Do you have anyone helping to fund your housing? Yes.

Do you pay for your living expenses? Partially.

How do you earn your income? Side hustle.

How much did it cost to decorate your space? $1,200.

Do you have anyone helping to fund your decor? Yes.

What was your best budget find for this space? My full body mirror, $50.

What was your biggest splurge for this space? My bedding, $200.

Full Length Mirror, $99.99, at TikTok Shop

Taylor’s Advice

What was your biggest challenge in decorating your space? My biggest challenge was moving twice in 24 hours. I had to redecorate my whole room because the first room I was placed in was not cleared/inhabitable at the time.

What’s your best tip for optimizing a small space? Putting your bed on risers!!!! This helps so much with maximizing your space and hiding any pieces of furniture you don’t want sitting out.
