16 Moments from the “Hannah Montana” Special I Can’t Stop Thinking About (I Need to Rewatch It Immediately!)
There are very few TV shows that conjure core memories for me, but Hannah Montana is one of them.
Disney Channel had a hold on me for a while, but this show was the peak. I started watching it a few years after it debuted in March 2006 (20 years ago!). It wasn’t just a show I had on in the background — watching reruns was an after-school routine. Hannah Montana was the thing I begged my parents to let me stay up for, and I played the 2009 movie at every sleepover I had. And more than that, it was one of the first times people my age saw a girl who felt normal and familiar, but also had this huge, exciting double life.
It was a full cultural moment — one that reached way beyond just kids and teens (the special even has an old clip of former President Barack Obama trying to get concert tickets in a skit about Miley and Hannah). So when the 20th anniversary special dropped on Disney+ on March 24, I was seated. From the second Miley Cyrus strut on stage before launching into the iconic theme song, “Best of Both Worlds,” it was already perfect. (Warning: This post includes some spoilers for the special.)

And there are some special guests, including Selena Gomez and Chappell Roan!
The Best Quotes from the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special
“Good to be home.” —Miley
Opening the entire special with this before she sang “Best of Both Worlds” felt like an instant reset back into that world.
“This show defined an entire generation.” —Alex Cooper
It sounds dramatic, but it’s so true.
“With Emily [Osment] I felt like I had a teammate.” —Miley
I loved this, because the Lilly-Miley friendship taught me what it means to be a best friend.
“You never tried to keep me Hannah; you wanted Miley to be herself.” —Miley, to her mom, Tish Cyrus
This was such a sweet mother-daughter moment — especially after learning how much Tish contributed to the show! She picked so many of Hannah and Miley’s iconic outfits!
“Get ready to really cry.” —Miley
A warning that fully delivered before the final song.
“I loved being Hannah then; I’m so living for it now.” —Miley
You honestly can really tell how much Miley enjoyed playing the character of Hannah Montana. I’m just glad she loved it as much as we did!
The Best Moments from the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special
Miley singing Hannah Montana hits.
Hearing Miley sing Hannah’s songs with her adult voice added a layer of emotion to songs we’ve all heard a hundred times. I love these renditions, and Miley’s voice is still perfect! The “Hoedown Throwdown” moment was so funny. I can’t believe she still remembers the choreography! “This Is the Life” was nostalgic, and “The Climb” was perfect. That was always my favorite song!
The nostalgic transitional sound effects.
The “woahhh, yeah” transition audio was such a small production detail, but it immediately transported you back to watching Disney Channel in the mid-2000s.
Miley’s reaction to seeing the Hannah Montana set.
Watching the Grammy-winning singer come back to the set and saying it felt like home didn’t come off as scripted — just genuinely nostalgic and authentic. The way Miley kept emphasizing how grateful she is to fans was so sweet. You could tell she really loved Hannah and making people happy.
The throwback to Miley’s audition.
Finding out that Miley had no acting experience and was a cheerleader before the show was so shocking! I would’ve never guessed. Disney executives said she was the bigger risk casting-wise, due to inexperience, but had the highest reward! Her singing voice, her energy and enthusiasm, and the reliability factor was the reason she was chosen. It’s the reason we all love her too!
The BFF origin story.
Learning that Emily Osment and Mitchel Musso were the first people Miley met on set makes their on-screen trio feel even more authentic.
Jake vs. Jesse closure.
We FINALLY get the real tea on the Jake versus Jesse storyline, and Miley confirms she herself would’ve picked Jake IRL. I knew it all along!
Surprise guest appearances.
Selena Gomez showed up! Seeing Selena tap back into her roots as Mikayla, Hannah’s sworn pop enemy on the show, was so fun. But seeing their real-life friendship made it even more special. And to see Chappell Roan talking about growing up watching Hannah Montana — she’s honestly just like us.
The best of both (fashion) worlds.
The closet reveal was everything. Still one of the most iconic TV details ever. The fashion breakdown of Miley Stewart and Hannah Montana was fascinating. I loved seeing how intentional those looks were — especially with Miley’s mom being so involved.
The Taylor Swift shoutout.
Finding out Taylor Swift wrote “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home” for the 2009 Hannah Montana movie was mind-blowing, but it actually made so much sense because she was coming up in country music at the time.
The final scenes of the special.
Re-creating the final scene of the show was so good. Miley’s performance of “Younger You,” a new original song she wrote for the special, was amazing. The absolute perfect way to close it out.
