On Chloe’s (@itschloelizabethh on IG and @itschloelizabethh on TikTok) shelf, she keeps a “personality stack” of books, including titles from Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Pete Buttigieg. Chloe’s room is the epitome of dopamine decor — including intentionally placed decorative pieces and trinkets that make her happy.

As a freshman studying political science, American studies, and French at George Washington University, Chloe combines her love of interior design with decor that holds special meaning, like a print of a boarding pass for her college town, Washington D.C.

Chloe’s Space

How’d you end up in this space? It was randomly assigned by the school.

Now that you’ve made the space your own, what specifically do you love about it? I was impressed with my closet space! I think I love the closet the most, and I’ll miss that the most. I also love the bedding I have, and the way that it all looks so put together. I wanted to be an interior designer when I was a kid, and getting to decorate my dorm room this past year was the coolest thing ever for me.

What’s your space best known for? It’s just my unwinding space. I actually don’t spend much time in my room other than when I’m asleep or running in and out because of how busy I am, but it’s been a nice place to come back to after my long days. I also film daily outfit TikToks in my room, so some of my friends recognize the space from those videos.

Chloe’s Style

Define your personal home style: Northeast preppy, Parisian chic. It’s vintage, LoveShackFancy, coastal granddaughter.

What’s your proudest DIY or product hack? My closet decor, which is just designer bags hung on clear Command hooks!

What’s your favorite element of your space? A recent addition, it’s the little printout of the comment Amy Poehler made on a recent TikTok of mine thanking her for her role in why I am working in politics today. It’s right by my jewelry, which I put on every day, so every day I can be reminded that my biggest inspiration thinks I’m awesome.

Chloe’s Budget

To remove the stigma associated with talking about money in college, we’re asking students to share how they plan and budget for their space.

How much does your housing cost per semester? $6,200

Do you have anyone helping to fund your housing? My parents.

Do you pay for your living expenses? Partially.

How do you earn your income? Part-time job.

How much did it cost to decorate your space? Around $1,000.

Do you have anyone helping to fund your decor? My parents paid for the necessities, and I paid for the fun things and splurge purchases.

What was your best budget find for this space? I snagged the headboard for free at a reuse market and washed the cover.

What was your biggest splurge for this space? The Pottery Barn bedding was about $200 in total.

Chloe’s Advice

What was your biggest challenge in decorating your space? I was working with my parents to make this as affordable as possible. Coming to D.C. from California, I also acquired most of the things in my room when I got to school. I paid out of pocket for all of the splurges on nicer things (like the Pottery Barn stuff), but my parents paid for the rest and we just got affordable stuff at Target and Amazon. And everything was purchased and shipped like three days before move-in!

What’s your best tip for optimizing a small space? Command hooks. Just Command products in general. Seriously such a lifesaver. Also, anything that can fold up; my laundry hamper and my clothes drying rack can both fold up instantly. Get a lingerie bag to put your socks in when you do laundry, and you’ll never lose a sock again.
