This Five Below “Disco Ball Ice Bucket Hack” Is Perfect for Your Plants
Keeping plants in your dorm room or college bedroom is a really special way to bring your space to life. I’m a proud plant owner myself, and have managed to keep my jade plant alive for nearly six months! (If you’re lacking a natural green thumb, there are simple tricks to keep in mind to maintain healthy plants.)
Bringing in plants is also a super fun chance to add some extra personality to your decor — through both the types of plants and the planters. A great example: One Instagrammer is using this Five Below disco ball ice bucket as a planter, and it’s really giving “mirrorball” by Taylor Swift vibes. I love this creative way to jazz up your plants!
In an Instagram Reel, Eduardo Robles (@trinitytropicals) showed off the Five Below purchase and the beautiful, trailing Hoya compacta plant Robles put inside it. “😮💨 I’ve been influenced,” one commenter responded. Another wrote, “Ooh I need one! 😍💫🪴🪩.”
Important note: Since the disco ball is originally an ice bucket, it doesn’t have a drainage hole like many plant pots have. So if you decide to try out Robles’ planter idea, keep the plant in its original grow pot like Robles does in the video when you transfer it to the disco ball. Remove the grow pot when it’s time to water your plant (and empty out any excess water that ends up in the container).
If you’re feeling fancy, you could also drill a hole in the bottom of the disco ball to create DIY drainage.
My favorite thing about this disco ball container is the stunning rainbow it will cast on your room when sunlight hits its mirrored surfaces — what a great view to wake up to! You can find the ice bucket at Five Below stores for $15, but it’s unavailable to order online.
I did find a similar disco ball planter on Amazon for $11.99. This one comes with hooks and materials for hanging, though it also doesn’t have a drainage hole.
And if you love the idea of all of this but it’s feeling a little overwhelming, you could simply go with this faux plant in a disco ball planter that Five Below sells for just $5.55.
