Recently, my TikTok For You Page has been flooded with videos about “dot cakes.” At first, I didn’t think much of it, but now it feels like almost every other video is about the viral sprinkle-topped cake in a cup. Unfortunately, since they come from a New York bakery and I don’t live in the state, I don’t have the pleasure of trying them in person. Luckily, I’ve done a little searching, and  there are a bunch of other delicious dopamine desserts you can try regardless of where you live.

What Is a Dot Cake?

The “dot cake” craze originated from a Long Island bakery called The Dotcakes, which recently began selling their colorful confections at Butterfield Market, a gourmet grocery store in Manhattan. New York. Dot cakes are cups filled with cake, frosted, and then topped with colorful, crunchy nonpareil sprinkles. They’re designed to dig into and eat with a spoon, much like a cup of ice cream.

Recently, dot cakes have been selling out so regularly that Butterfield Market has a notice on their website saying, “Due to high demand, Dot Cakes often sell out within an hour.” The shortage and the fact that you can only get the real thing in New York has encouraged many people to make their own DIY dot cakes. Buying or making them has become a social media trend: running your spoon across the top of the sprinkle crust for the tingly the ASMR sounds, and then satisfyingly cracking into it and dipping it into a delicious cake.

Dot cakes are a great example of what we’d like to call a “dopamine dessert” —  a colorful or playful-looking confection that you can’t help but eat with your eye first because it brings you joy just to look at.
