It’s easy to run to the store and quickly pick out the first Valentine’s Day card you find in the big red section most places have this time of year. But whether you’re giving a card to your partner, friend, roommate, or family member, you can make it way more personal with a quick activity.

Choose one or several of the following DIY Valentine’s Day card ideas, sit down for an hour with some basic arts and crafts supplies, and doodle and cut away to create a unique card anyone would love to receive. Make it a relaxing experience for yourself by putting on your favorite TV show or playlist. Or invite your friends over for a Galentine’s event and exchange your cards at the end of the night.

Vinyl Record Card

Design and give this card DIY — created by Pinterest user @artsyosheen — to the music lover in your life! Personalize the color and message inside for who you’re sending it to. According to @artsyosheen, you’ll want to fold a paper rectangle in half, glue together three of the four sides, cut a shallow crescent moon out of the unglued side, and draw on the front. To create the record, cut out a separate paper circle and add your artistic style, and don’t forget to write your message on the back.

Three Mini Envelopes Card

With this idea from Arti Almale (@arthesticartsy) on Pinterest, you can create three miniature cards with a different personalized message in each one. Either send love notes to your significant other or words of appreciation to your friends. Follow the steps in the video above to create the mini envelopes and messages using small pieces of paper and attach them to one main card. Or simply create the teeny envelopes and notes and give them to different people who need a little extra love.

Half Circle Pocket Message Card

This card, originally posted by @crafty_bliss_ on TikTok, looks complex, but is so simple to make and will easily blow away the recipient. Cut out a small square of card stock and four circles that have the same diameter as the square. Fold each circle in half and glue one side of each to the back of the square (this should create a type of envelope). Then add your own pattern or design, including a short message on the front of the square. To keep the envelope closed, draw a small image, like a heart, on a separate piece of card stock. Then, cut it out and glue it to one of the closed envelope flaps, so it creates a tab.

Cherry-ish Card

With cherries on top of everything right now, this is an adorable option to give to someone extra sweet in your life. According to the video above from Karin Yiwen (@karinyiwen), first you should customize a rectangular paper card sleeve with whatever pattern you’d like (Yiwen used pink bows and orange flowers). Then divide the rectangle into thirds, fold in the two outside corner pieces, and glue them to the middle third’s borders. Cut out a card insert slightly smaller than the middle third of the rectangular envelope, then add your personalized cherry design and the phrase “I Cherry-ish U.” Don’t forget the bow, and you’re all set!

There are tons of DIY Valentine’s Day card ideas out there, but the four options above are all great upgrades to standard grocery store offerings. Whatever cards you give this year, make them personal and heartfelt. Everyone loves to know they’re cherished, so spread the appreciation with a custom message and keepsake card.
