This Supercute Craft Is the Easiest Way to Refresh Dorm Decor You Already Have (Make It in Minutes!)
I don’t know about you, but I get tired of my decor so fast. When you’re in a dorm, especially, you’re probably spending a lot more time in your space than you would in a regular bedroom. If I don’t switch up my room decorations every few months, I get bored looking at the same things every single day. That being said, I do not have an unlimited budget to fully redo my space every quarter.
Decor can be expensive, which is why I usually can’t switch up the aesthetic in my space as often as I’d like. However, I’m in love with the idea in this TikTok video I came across from DIYer Tina LeMac. She showcased a cheap, easy, and quick way to switch my decorations with my mood, the season, or whatever vibe I’m feeling.
While Tina’s was the first video I saw about this hack, it actually started with interior designer Jack Kinsey, who first showed off this simple yet impressive vase hack to change up the look of a flower jar or holder.
How to Make a Fun Vase Cover
To make this vase cover at home, you don’t need much, but here’s what you’ll need to make sure you have.
Supplies:
- Two sheets of paper larger than the jar you’re covering (here’s a roll where you can pick your paper size)
- Paint and brushes or markers
- Scissors
- Glue stick
I don’t know about you, but most of these are supplies I already have in my house, making it the perfect craft to keep up my sleeve for the next rainy day or free afternoon I have.
To start, you need two pieces of paper, either precut sheets or sheets you cut to fit around your vase. It’s up to you whether you want to make your vase double sided or if it’ll only be viewed from one side.
Depending on your level of artistry, your next step may vary. You can either sketch a design and shape with a pencil, or start with the paint or markers and get creative, designing from your heart. If you start with a sketch, you’ll first lay out your design, and then fill it in with color. (Even if you’re not drawing a design, you probably want to outline your vase shape.)
From there, you have to cut out the vase and glue both pieces of paper together on the sides. Leave the top and bottom open so it can slide over your glass or vase full of water. Wait to put flowers in until after you’ve added the sleeve.
In the video, Tina draws a blue vase and an ancient-looking vase, but you can draw whatever you’d like — maybe a pumpkin to go with the fall weather or get a start on going full holiday mode.
Find Your Perfect Base Vase
If you don’t have a vase to get started, you can always look at your local thrift store (mine usually has some fun, colored glass options!) or buy one online.
This 8-inch, $10 clear vase from Amazon will easily get the job done. With the wider opening at top, it’ll be good for lots of stems to fit.
