These Crispy “Honey Butter” Potato Chips Are So Good, I Was Obsessed After Just One Bite
I love a good potato chip — crispy, salty, satisfying — but add a delicious flavor, and I’m sold. (Barbecue is my absolute favorite.) So when I stumbled upon these honey butter potato chips, I knew they deserved a spot in my pantry. They’re so good, I have to hide the bag from myself!
What You Should Know About Calbee’s Honey Butter Potato Chips
Calbee is a 76-year-old Japanese brand with standout snacks like Shrimp Chips, Takoyaki Ball Chips, and Harvest Snaps Veggie Chips. The brand’s potato chip flavors all sound delicious, too: Hot & Spicy, Seaweed & Salt, Pizza Potato, and Honey Butter.
As someone who loves a good sweet-and-savory combo, I jumped at the chance to try the Honey Butter Potato Chips. Fried in vegetable oil, these potato chips are coated in a honey butter seasoning that includes butter powder, honey powder, salt, sugar, and yeast extract. (We’ll discuss the flavor in more detail below.)
They’re selling fast—so if you want to try them, too, this is a run-don’t-walk situation. You can get a box of six 2.8-ounce bags of potato chips for $28.99 or a box of 12 for $42.99.
My Honest Review of Calbee’s Honey Butter Potato Chips
The first flavor note I got from these chips was that sweet (but not too sweet) honey. That gives way to the savory, slightly earthy taste of the potato itself mixed with a satisfying saltiness. What I wasn’t expecting is a subtle cheese flavor from the yeast extract in the seasoning, but it’s not overpowering.
The chip itself is crunchy and light, very similar to a Lay’s potato chip. The taste and texture combine to create the kind of potato chip that has me reaching back into the bag until there’s nothing but crumbs. And that is perhaps the highest compliment I can pay any potato chip.
